This project has been 7 years in the making and there is still so much more work to be done to raise the young floodplain forest to an age where the trees will be big enough to fully restore South Prairie Creek to a system sustained by natural floodplain processes. Chinook have already been spotted spawning and juvenile steelhead feeding in and around the newly constructed log jams on the South Prairie Creek soon after construction. The Pierce Conservation District will be investing decades into restoring the floodplain forest with local crews, nursery suppliers, and volunteers from the community. Project construction lasted 7 months and was a team effort with local contractor as the lead with help from other local sub-contractors and suppliers. This project was made possible because of the dedicated work of many, including employees from over 35 tribal governments, public agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private businesses. This project required strong partnerships to take on this multi-year design venture, ambitious construction schedule, and landscape-scale planting effort to bring this project into being. The first customer? Art Rankin, a long time area resident and historian was at the cash register at 8:01 a.m. They are located at 18707 Pacific Avenue South, Spanaway, WA 98387. On President’s Day the store will have holiday hours. South End Ace Hardware will open from 8 a.m. Now Brian Hutchinson and Tamara Harrison will carry on the tradition of Spanaway’s local small business hardware service. In 1995, Brian purchased the hardware store from his parents. In the 1960’s and early 70’s the store was owned by the Righetti family who sold to Rex and Virginia Stead in 1971. Brian and Tamara are working the cash registers today so you can come out and meet them. He is assisting the news owners, Brian Hutchinson and Tamara Harrison, to get acquainted with the store, the computer cashier system and the clientele. Former owner, Brian Stead was present today at the store to tell the news that he has retired. And in a surprise move, the hardware was sold at the beginning of the month. Today, February 12, 2020, the store has re-opened. Loved by many local Spanaway area residents for more than 70 years, the store closed last year after a February snow storm collapsed the roof. SPANAWAY - Today marks the official re-opening of the South End Ace Hardware Store.
